唐朝有個尚書叫胡証，他膂力過人，和裴度是同年進士。有一天，裴度在酒店喝酒，有十多人個力士看裴度好欺負，便有意調侃，裴度看瞄頭不對，暗中派人趕緊跟胡証求救。
不久，胡証穿黑貂袍、束金腰帶破門而入，諸軍士看到魁梧高大的胡証，都嚇出一身冷汗。胡証連喝三鍾酒，約莫數升，杯盤裡滴酒不剩。待店主人點上燈來，胡証起身取過鐵燈臺，毫不費力摘去枝葉，隨後將底座覆蓋並橫放在腿上，對眾人說：「我想打破慣例，更改酒令。把三鍾酒都倒滿，奏一遍〈三臺曲〉，曲終必需把酒喝完，而且不能留下半滴。違犯此令者，我就用燈臺揍他。」說完，胡証又喝了三鍾。
輪到一個角觝力士喝酒，〈三臺曲〉曲子很短，他膽戰心驚地猛灌三鍾，曲子連奏三遍後，不僅酒沒喝完，且濺到同座。胡証舉起燈臺作勢打人，那群惡漢立馬起身下拜叩頭求饒，異口同聲地稱誦胡証為「神人」。
胡証說：「你們這群鼠輩膽敢欺負我同年，今天暫且饒了性命，下次如果再遇上，別怪我不客氣。」喝斥一番，才叫他們：「滾」，力士們個個嚇到屁滾尿流，趕緊溜之大吉。
有道是：「拳頭大好說話。」文人如果長的乾乾瘦瘦的，打架就沒本錢﹔如果有一身肌肉、一手拳腳功夫，惡煞怎敢囂張？當年如果沒有胡証挺身幫助，鐵定會上演一齣〈酒店風雲秀〉，屆時力士們下手重了，就沒有後來「裴度為相」的故事。
